    专利摘要翻译是专利翻译的 一个组成部分，阅读专利说明书摘要有助于情报检索，迅速了解发明的主要内容。摘要的宇数通常控制在 200个词左右。为了能简明扼要地表达发明的要点和主要用途，往往使用长句，以及各种从句 （从句套从句）、倒装句，另有分词独立结构作状语和现在分词或过去分词短语作定语等。因此，对于翻译公司的译员要译好专利文摘，弄清原文的语法关系至关重要。我们以美国专利 4,245,966号的摘要的第一句为例，讲述一下专利翻译的英译中：

In a device such as a refrigerant compressor provided with a reciprocating piston having a stroke length which can be changed from one value to another in accordance with the direction of rotation of the crank shaft driving a connecting rod，there is provided an arrangement in which the top dead-center position of the piston can be maintained irrespective of the changes in stroke length by an eccentric ring which has limited rotation on the crank shaft crankpin，and a second eccentric ring encompassing the first eccentric ring and which has limited rotation relative to the encompassing strap end of the connecting rod.

   这一句很长，为一复合句。该复合句第一个逗号前为一状语部分，其中有：1. 过去分词短语 provided with a reciprocating piston，作定语，修饰 refrigerant compressor；2. 现在分词短语 having a stroke length作定语，修饰 reciprocating piston；3. 定语从句 which can be changed another，修饰 a stroke length；I介词短语 in accordance with the crank shaft，作状语，修饰 Can be changed；4.现在分词短语 driving a connecting rod作定语，修饰 the crankshaft。

   第一个逗号后为主句部分，there is provided an arrangement是倒装结构，主语为 an arrangement。紧跟定语从句 in which the top can be maintained，在谓语 can be maintained后跟上介词 by短语作状语，by后有两个并列宾语：an eccentric ring，它又套上一个定语从句 which have limited rotation crankpin；另一并列成分为：a second eccentric ring，后跟作定语的现在分词短语 encompassing the first eccentric ring，又跟定语从句 and which has limited rotation，说明 a second eccentric ring；另有形容词短语 relative to作定语，修饰 limited rotation。
